Rough. Just how your mother likes it, Trebek.

Indian/Celtic Study

((((UPDATE: So over the last few days I've been Office PAing on a new feature being shot here, "Snow", directed by former NFB director Rohan Fernando. And...when we go to film I'll be a daily on Art. Dept. (ooh my first time in Art Dept!) What's super ironic (and of course sad) is that the plot is about tsunami victims from India; lately I've been taking a lot of inspiration from the nation's art and film. It's fate, I tell you! ;) I'm happy to say we have a great cast and crew and I'm excited and honoured to be on board!)))))))

So lately I've been listening to a lot of Bollywood music. I used to catch the occasional movie when I lived back in Oakville on Omni. The one thing I can't understand about Bollywood is why they always cast like this hot hot perfect ten female--and like the lead male is always in some ugly Christmas sweater from 1987 and has a variety of hairy birthmarks all over his face, or some equivalent. And these guys are considered superstars...

Hmm... Wait a minute.

Anyway, I love taking from traditional design. The above and below really don't.

On a side note, this Saturday I finally was able to see the Secret of Kells! Irish film by Cartoon Saloon that's been in production too long... They based their designs on traditional (flat) artwork as seen in the real-life book. I could go into it more, but the one thing I saw that lacked consistency was the flatness of the characters' hands...some had more of a super paper thin profile and others seemed to allow more dimension. I was debating on the above sketch hands but meh, not finishing it anyway...

(Above 2 are from Kells. Didn't draw 'em obviously!!)

I find in Indian art there's a lot of round shapes. If you look at the sculpture, besides kinky sex you see a lot of curves. Women's arms are round and their baseball shaped boobs make me wonder if silicone was around 1000 years ago. Even men aren't particular angular, and have a characteristic round chin. I was hooked this past summer when I went to Boston; their museum's collection is wow!

Cooking Pot Pirate...finally.

I began a-brewin' this 'un last September. Finally cleaning up some designs for The Cooking Pot Pirate. Here's Queenie:

Meh. I'm too lazy to finish (The Pirate King) Griefgarrow tonight. And in PS too, blah. I'm also angry angry angry because I can't find a perfect turnaround of him I drew a couple months ago. Tucked it away someplace "safe." Curses. Anyway, yes I messed with the sword, still don't like it.

I began to clean up Griefgarrow in Photoshop for the sole, lazy ass reason that in my Linux partition I can't watch House on Ninjavideo in tandem. Damn. So on a night I'm feeling less lazy I'll do some updates and do up Queenie and Cookie in Flash.

EDITING SEGMENTS!!!!! WOWIE WOW!

So I've edited on a cool l'il indie feature here in Halifax, written by WGC recipient Gregory Heyn. It's even got a new score written for it by Fred Penner, which, for a kids film, means its gotta be awesome. (Man, I think the only thing awesomer would be going on a tour of a marshmallow factory with Mr. Rogers.)

UPDATE: Here's the beginning of my series of uploads of my editing Opus for a Miracle. Unfortunately due to a misunderstanding my director burned me not a data DVD but a DVD player compatible .TS DVD. So I've been spending the last three hours figuring out how to convert since I won't be able to re-export for a couple days.

video

The above clip features older Monty and young Lucas trying to get to know each other...and figure out how they'll ever work together to make a music video honoring 14-year-old Theo's dead mother. Really happy with my editing in this one because there wasn't a ton of useable cover.

*Scavenger hunt* Did you spot the alternating pile count of tapes?

I know you didn't...because I tried to make it less obvious...

video

This is my fav!!!! Geraldine attempts to bond with pigtailed Gabby by taking her to her apartment at the retirement home... but thinks better of it. I doubt the lighting at the beginning is broadcast safe, so I've got to correct that. Really wish we would have had some lights at the end.

Ooh lala

I really want to do some pieces via rubber prints, including transferring this one. Thinking the theme of a series of these be sort of fifties international travel...Can't decide on what I'd mount it on, cardboard or a raw wood.

More M.E.A.R.T.H.

Ducks...and a Fisher. Whatever that is.

I love proclaiming my love for the Halifax Public Gardens. They're gorgeous and surrounded by a spike ornate wrought iron fence that makes you feel trapped in with the weird garden bums and are bizarrely next to one of the city's older cemetaries, like some sort of weird Victorian memento mori ("Oh look, Ralph darling, we can see Great-Grandmummy from here"). What's a shame about being in the city is the lack of wildlife, cept for ducks and pidgeons. So I've been drawing the little walking crap machines lately...
And one last odd tidbit. The little guy above with fur is a "Fisher". Never heard of the things before. They look like weasels but hang out in trees. Whatever they are, I don't think I can eat them.

M.E.A.R.T.H. and happiness...

So I recently had the priveledge of doing some character designs for Mr. David Blomme of HB Studios here in Halifax. He's shopping around a very sweet new idea for a new 18-34 audience animated show and said pitch is now illustrated by yours truly...so I'm a bit biased but whatev. Networks, check 'er out. Oh. And be forewarned that these are meant to be like three to a 8.5x11 so the line quality on some is meh.
